JLR Appoints PB Balaji as CEO Amid EV Push, Trump’s Backlash & 2039 Net Zero Goal
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has named PB Balaji, currently Tata Motors’ CFO, as its new CEO, effective November 2025, succeeding Adrian Mardell, who is retiring after three transformative years. Balaji’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment as JLR accelerates its "electric first" strategy, aiming to become a fully electrified brand by 2025. Jaguar will relaunch as an all-electric luxury marque, while six electric Land Rover models are planned by 2026. The company targets net-zero emissions across its supply chain, operations, and products by 2039, investing over £500 million in UK EV manufacturing.
JLR’s sustainability journey includes using 100% renewable power across UK sites, introducing non-leather interiors, recycled materials, and circular aluminium systems. Its carbon roadmap is backed by science-based targets to halve value-chain emissions by 2030.
However, this transition faces resistance in the U.S., where President Trump has criticized JLR’s leadership and EV-focused messaging, calling it “woke.” He’s also proposing to revoke the EPA’s Endangerment Finding, undermining the legal foundation for national emissions regulation.
Despite political hurdles, JLR advances its Reimagine strategy, integrating circular economy principles, zero landfill waste, and community outreach via the JLR Foundation. The company admits challenges in aligning with global climate goals but remains committed to its sustainability mission.
JLR’s leadership change and strong EV roadmap signal bold steps, even as geopolitical dynamics test the resilience of global green ambitions.
